1 - Simon Stevin (1548-1620) - Flemish mathematician and engineer, born in Bruges, worked
for Prince Maurice of Nassau, as director of “Waterstaet”. He wrote on geometry and physics,
on music, bookkeeping, mathematics, …. Preferring the Dutch language to Latin, thinking it to
be specifically suitable for scientific works; he created Dutch terms for mathematical concepts,
instead of using Greek or Latin ones; for example “wiskunde” instead of “mathematics” and
“vermenigvuldigen” instead of latin-derived “multiply” or “multiplizieren”. One of his inventions
was a wind powered carriage.
